I HAVE A RENDEZVOU WITH DEATH
I have a rendezvous with Death
At some disputed barricade,
When Spring comes back with rutling shade
And apple-blossoms fill the air —
I have a rendezvous with Death
When Spring backs blue days and fair.
It may be he shall take my hand
And feed me into this dark land
And close my eyes and quench my breath —
It may be I shall pass him still.
I have a rendevous with Death
On some Spring comes round again this year
And the first meadow-flowers appear.
God knows ´t were better to be deep
Pillowed in silk and scented down,
Where Love throbs out in blissful sleep,
Pulse nigh to pulse, and breath to breath,
Where hushed awakening are dear...
But I´ve a rendezvous with Death
At Midnight in some flaming town,
When Spring trips north again this year,
And I tom y pledged word am true,
I shall not fail that rendezvous.

TEREI UMA ENTREVISTA COM A MORTE
( 1915)
Terei uma entrevista com a Morte
em certa barricada em que se lute,
quando com suas sombras murmurantes
de novo a Primavera regressar
e as flores da macieira encherem o ar...
Terei uma entrevista com a Morte,
quando trouxer de novo a Primavera
os dias azulados e brilhantes.
Talvez ela me tome pela mão
e me conduza para a escuridão
do seu país, feche meus olhos, corte
minha respiração... Talvez eu passe
ao lado dela silenciosamente...
Terei uma entrevista com a Morte
de uma colina destroçada, quando
este ano a Primavera vier chegando
e abrir nos prados as primeiras flores.
